This information bulletin is intended to provide basic information to participants who join the Institute for the first time.  It is not possible to have all the information in this single document but additional information can be found in the UMI Regulations and Guidelines copies of which are available from the Reception, Custodian and the Library or provided on request.

Administrative Structures at the Institute

The Institute is headed by the Director General and assisted by the two Directors; Director Programs and Student Affairs, and Director Finance and Administration. At UMI we operate as a team and participants can be assisted at any level.  However, the following officers are of particular interest to participants.

  • Receptionist – For general information on UMI programmes and activities.
  • Course Manager – Overall liaison with the Institute Management;
  • Assistant Registrar(s) – For all Student Records;
  • Cashier – For all payments;
  • Warden – For accommodation, security and general welfare;
  • Nurse – For first aid treatment and counseling;

Location

The Uganda Management Institute commonly referred to as UMI is located on plots 44 – 52 Jinja Road – about 2.5 km from the City Centre just before Jinja Road Police Station.

Jinja Road has two lanes leading to the City Centre and one lane for outgoing traffic.  You are advised to be very careful when crossing the lanes because there have been a number of fatal accidents.

UMI is mostly a secure place but we recommend vigilance and information sharing where you detect problems.  Valuables  should never be left unattended.

UMI has three regional study Centres located at Mbale, Mbarara and Gulu.

Accommodation and Meals

The Institute has a hostel with a total of 148 beds. These are single rooms designed to suit the basic requirement of participants. There is a canteen in which items of necessity like soap, toothpaste, slippers, vaseline are available for sale.  The Canteen also sells a variety of drinks.

For meal, there is the Dining Hall located within the Hostel complex and a cafeteria located at the Global Distance Learning Centre.

Extra Curricular Activities

Due to the on-going construction activities on the Main Campus it is not possible to provide both the indoor and outdoor games. One can go to the nearby areas for recreation outside the Institute which include:  Lugogo Indoor Stadium (Jinja Road) Golf Club (Yusuf Lule Road former Kitante Road) and BMK Health Club (Wampewo Avenue) all of which are within a walking distance from the Institute.
