Postgraduate
Postgraduate Diploma
Normally a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognised University in a subject or subjects relevant to the course applied for. Each programme has its Admission requirements stipulated under the Faculty/School/Institute Website.
Duration of Programme: 1 Academic Year
Masters Degree
Normally a Bachelor’s degree of at least second class, lower division or equivalent from a recognised University. Applicants with lower qualifications must satisfy the relevant department and the Postgraduate Admissions Board that they have acquired academic growth, for instance, by evidence of research and publications or a relevant Postgraduate Diploma of Second class division. In some departments, a qualifying course followed by examination is given.
Duration of Programme: Full time – 2 Calendar years
Part time – 3 Calendar years
Master of Medicine degree: Full time – 3 Calendar years
Doctor Of Philosophy (Ph.D)
Normally a Master’s degree from a recognised University in a field relevant to the area of further studies. First degree graduates who wish to register for Ph.D. would normally register for a master’s degree first and after a year or two of satisfactory progress may apply for upgrading of their candidature to Ph.D. level. A research outline (synopsis) of 3-5 pages length should accompany the application. This will be useful as a guide for PROVISIONAL ADMISSION for one year during which time the applicant will develop a comprehensive research proposal necessary for a FULL ADMISSION as soon as the proposal is approved.

M.D. Degree
A Master’s degree in Medicine from a recognised University.

LLD. Degree
A Master degree in Law from a recognised University.
Duration of Programme: Full time – 3 Calendar Years
Part time – 5 Calendar Years
D. Litt. & D.Sc. (Higher Doctorates)
Degrees are awarded upon successful submission of original published and unpublished works on the area/topic of specialization. These are higher doctorates normally applied for by holders of Ph.D. degrees. Makerere University Admission Requirements.
Have the Uganda Certificate of Education with at least (five passes), or its equivalent and at least two principal passes at Advanced Level obtained at the same sitting. For day programmes, only candidates who sat “A” Level in 2013, 2012 and 2011 are eligible to apply. For Evening, Afternoon, and External programmes, a candidate is not restricted on the year of sitting “A” Level.
Or
Hold at least a Second Class or Credit (or equivalent classification) Diploma from a recognised institution, relevant to the programmes applied for. Be a Graduate from a recognised university.
International Students
Makerere University welcomes International Students who satisfy the minimum entry requirements-see weighting system and Diploma holders’ requirements for Advanced Level and Diploma holders’ applicants respectively.
- Get pay in slips from Stanbic or DFCU bank at the main campus Makerere University where applicable.
- After paying the Fee of USD $ 75 or 172,500 UGX take the bank slip to the main building (Finance Department) for verification where applicable.
- On presentation of the application fee bank slip, pick the application form from Room 316, Level 3, Senate Building.
- Applicants with academic documents prescribed in other languages other than English should be submitted to the School of Languages, Makerere University for translation into English.
- Applicants who obtained qualifications elsewhere other than Uganda should take their secondary school academic documents to Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) located in Ntinda for purposes of being equated to Ugandan grades.
- Completed forms should be returned to level 3, Senate Building, Room 316, and the following documents MUST be attached to the application form:
- Original Pay in slip from the Bank
- One Passport size photograph of the applicants’ current likeness
- Photocopies of Secondary School Certificates (i e Ordinary Level and Advanced Level) or its equivalent.
- Diploma/Degree holder’s applicants MUST attach certified photocopies of their academic transcripts issued by the awarding institutions.
- Applicants from countries where the language of instruction is not English are required to bring evidence of proficiency of English. However, Makerere University (School of Languages) conducts proficiency tests on request.
- Applicants wishing to be admitted to the Bachelor of Laws programme offered by Makerere University are required to take a pre-entry examination.
- International students MUST present insurance certificates from a reputable insurance firm at the time of admission.So, the insurance firm should cater for any eventuality not Makerere University.

Certified copies of Diploma Transcripts (not photocopies of certified copies) from the awarding Institutions must be attached to the application forms. Incomplete application forms shall not be accepted.

Each applicant should also attach a copy of the Birth Certificate to the application form.
Candidates are warned against submitting forged academic documents.
Government Sponsorship
The number of candidates admitted to each programme under the Diploma Holders Avenue does not exceed 5% of the intake per programme.
For the Private Scheme the quota for Diploma/Degree Holder applicants does not exceed 20% of the intake per programme
The following Programmes have no Diploma Scheme.
(a) B.Sc. Education
(b) B.A. Education
(c) B. Sc (Actuarial Science)
(i) Ordinary Diploma Programme
The minimum entry requirements for admission to an ordinary diploma programme are:
a) Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least 5 passes
b) Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with at least 1 Principal pass and 2 Subsidiary passes obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.
ii) Admission of CISCO Holders to Makerere University Programmes
The requirements for admitting applicants who possess CISCO Qualification to programmes at Makerere University are:
a) A candidate who has completed the full series of training (known as CCNA 1- 4 stages) under the aegis of the CISCO programmes, can be considered as having obtained the equivalent of an Ordinary Diploma with effect from 2010/2011 Intake.
b) Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least 5 passes
c) Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with at least 1 Principal Pass and 2 Subsidiary Passes obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.
To be eligible for the Mature Age entry examinations, the candidate must be at least 25 years old during the year of application.
Application forms for those intending to sit the examinations are issued at the university, Room 505, Senate building on payment of non-refundable application fees of shs.150,000/= using makerere university bank paying-in slips in the following banks:-

- Post Bank
- dfcu Bank
- Centenary Bank
Mature Age Examinations are sat in December of the preceding academic year.The closing date for submitting the completed application forms is announced on the News Portal
