ADMISSION CRITERIA

Please find below KIU admission criteria;

  1. Selection of courses:

Academic programmes offered at the university are provided for in the fees structure.  A student chooses a course of preference for as long as he/she qualifies for it. An academic programme that does not appear on the list of courses is not offered at the University at the moment.

  1. Minimum entry qualifications;

The following are the minimum entry qualifications for admission at KIU approved and followed by university’s Admission Committee.

  1. I) COLLEGE OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT

  1. a) Bachelor of Business Administration

Two A Level Principal Passes of which one should be in Economics and one subsidiary pass plus five O level passes including a credit in Mathematics.

  1. b) Bachelor of International Business Administration

Two A Level Principal passes and one subsidiary pass plus five O ‘level passes including a credit in Mathematics.

  1. c) Bachelor of Marketing Management

Two A Level Principal passes of which one should be in Economics and one subsidiary pass plus five passes including a credit in Mathematics

  1. d) Bachelor of Human Resource Management

Two A Level Principal passes and one subsidiary pass including a subsidiary in Economics and five O Level passes including a credit in Mathematics.

  1. e) Bachelor of Supplies and Procurement Management

Two A Level principal passes and one subsidiary pass including a subsidiary pass in Economics and five O Level passes with a credit in Mathematics.

  1. f) Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Two A Level principal passes and one should be in Entrepreneurship and five O Level passes with a credit in Mathematics.

Bachelor of Business Computing

Two A Level principal passes in Mathematics, Economics, Physics or Geography and five O level passes including a credit in Mathematics

  1. g) Bachelor of Tourism and Hotel Management

Two A Level Principal passes and one subsidiary pass plus five O ‘level passes including a credit in Mathematics.

  1. h) Bachelor of Arts in Economics

Two A Level principal passes and one should be in Economics and five O Level passes with a credit in Mathematics.

  1. i) Bachelor of Science in Statistics

Two A Level principal passes in Mathematics and Economics plus five O Level passes with a credit in Mathematics.

  1. j) Bachelor of Economics and Applied Statistics

Two A Level principal passes in Mathematics and Economics and five O Level passes with a credit in Mathematics.

  1. k) Diploma in Business Administration

One principal pass in Economics and two subsidiary passes plus five credits at O Level including a credit in Mathematics.

  1. l) Diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management

One principal pass and two subsidiary passes plus five credits at O Level including a credit in Mathematics.

  1. m) Diploma in Secretarial and Office Management

One principal pass and two subsidiary passes plus five credits at O Level including a credit in Mathematics

  1. n) Certificate in Business Administration

Two subsidiary passes at A level plus five passes at O level including a credit in Mathematics

  1. II) SCHOOL OF COMPUTING AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

  1. b) Bachelor of Computer Science

Two A Level principal passes in either Mathematics or Physics and any other one subsidiary pass plus five credit passes at O Level.

  1. c) Bachelor of Computer Engineering

Two A Level principal passes in Mathematics, Physics and any other principal pass or subsidiary pass and five O level passes.

  1. d) Bachelor of Information Technology

Two A Level principal passes in either Arts or Science subjects and one subsidiary pass plus five O Level passes.

  1. e) Bachelor of Management Information Systems

Two A Level principal passes in either Arts or Science subjects and one subsidiary pass plus five O level passes.

  1. f) Bachelor of Library and Information Sciences

Two A Level principal passes in either Arts or Science subjects and one subsidiary pass plus five O level passes.

  1. g) Diploma in Library and Information Sciences

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes.

  1. h) Diploma in Computer Science

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes.

  1. i) Diploma in Information Technology

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes.

  1. j) Certificate in Computer Science

A Level with subsidiary passes and five O Level passes.

  1. k) Certificate in Library and Information Sciences

A Level with subsidiary passes and five O Level passes.

III) SCHOOL OF LAW

  1. a) Diploma in Law

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes

  1. b) Bachelor of Laws

Two A Level principal passes and one subsidiary pass plus five O level passes including a credit in English.  Holders of Diploma in Law from a recognized Institution of Higher Learning are eligible to apply.

  1. IV) COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

  1. a) Bachelor of Computer Science with Education

Two A Level Principal passes in either arts or science subjects plus one subsidiary pass in ICT and five O Level passes.

  1. b) Bachelor of Arts with Education

Two A Level Principal passes in arts subjects and one subsidiary pass, should have two teaching subjects.

  1. c) Bachelor of Science with Education

Two A Level principal passes in science subjects and five O Level passes, should have two teaching subjects in Science subjects.

  1. d) Bachelor of Education – In-service Arts/science Primary Option

Should have a Grade III Teachers Certificate and a Diploma in Primary Education from a recognized Institution of Higher Learning with two teaching subjects in either arts or science subjects.

  1. e) Bachelor of Education – In-service Science/Arts Secondary Option

Should have a Diploma in Secondary Education from a recognized Institution of higher learning with two teaching subjects and two A level principal passes.

  1. f) Bachelor of Education with Special Needs Education In-service

Applicants should have a Diploma in Special Needs Education from a recognized Institution of Higher learning

  1. g) Bachelor of Education with Guidance and Counseling In-service

Applicants should have a diploma in Education with Guidance and Counseling from a recognized Institution of higher learning, must have two teaching subjects.

  1. V) COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

  1. a) Certificate in Mass Communication

A Level with subsidiary passes and five O Level passes.

  1. b) Diploma in Mass Communication

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes

  1. c) Bachelor of Mass Communication

Two principal passes at A Level plus one subsidiary pass should have five passes at O Level or the equivalent.

  1. d) Diploma in Social Work and Social Administration

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes

  1. e) Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration

Two principal passes at A Level and one subsidiary pass or the equivalent plus five passes at O Level.

  1. f) Diploma in Development Studies

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes

  1. g) Bachelor of Development Studies

Two principal passes at A Level and one subsidiary pass or the equivalent plus five passes at O Level.

  1. h) Diploma in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes

  1. i) Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies

Two principal passes at A Level and one subsidiary pass or the equivalent plus five passes at O Level.

  1. j) Diploma in Conflict Resolution and Peace Building

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes

  1. k) Diploma in Social and Community Development

One A level principal pass, and two subsidiary passes in either Arts or Science subjects plus five O Level passes

  1. l) Bachelor of Social and Community Development

Two principal passes at A Level and one subsidiary pass or the equivalent plus five passes at O Level.

  1. m) Diploma in Development Studies

One A Level principal pass plus two subsidiary passes, and five passes at O Level

  1. n) Certificate in Public Administration

At least subsidiary passes at Advanced Level plus five passes at Ordinary Level   Certificate.

  1. VI) SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES

  1. a) Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery

Two A Level Principal passes at Advanced level in Biology and Chemistry plus one subsidiary pass in science subjects including general paper and five credits at Ordinary level in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.

  1. b) Bachelor of Pharmacy

Two A Level Principal passes at Advanced level in Biology and Chemistry plus one subsidiary pass in science subjects including general paper and five credits at Ordinary level in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.

  1. c) Bachelor of Nursing Sciences

Two A Level Principal passes at Advanced level in Biology and Chemistry plus one subsidiary pass in science subjects including general paper and five credits at Ordinary level in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.

  1. d) Bachelor of Clinical Medicine and Community Health

Two A Level Principal passes at Advance level in Biology and Chemistry plus one subsidiary pass in science subjects including general paper and five credits at Ordinary level in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.

  1. e) Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology

Two Principal passes at Advanced level in Biology and Chemistry/physics/Mathematics and five credits at Ordinary Level in English, Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

  1. f) Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Community Health

One principal pass in Biology at Advanced Level plus two subsidiaries passes in science subjects including general paper and five credits at Ordinary level including Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry and physics.

  1. g) Diploma in Nursing Sciences

One principal pass in Biology at Advanced level plus two subsidiary passes in science subjects including general paper and five credits at Ordinary level including Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry and physics.

  1. h) Diploma in Pharmacy

One principal pass in Chemistry at advanced level plus two subsidiary passes in science              subjects including general paper and five credits at ordinary level in Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

  1. i) Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology

One principal pass in Biology and a subsidiary pass in Chemistry and one subsidiary pass in science subjects including general paper plus five credits at ordinary level in Mathematics, English, Biology and Physics

DEGREE AND DIPLOMAS BY EXTENSION UNDER SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES

  • Bachelor of Clinical Medicine and Community Health

Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Community Health should be registered with relevant Bodies or Professional Councils of the home country.

Diploma in Pharmacy and should be registered with the relevant professional councils of the home country.

  • Bachelor of Nursing Sciences

For holders of Diploma in Nursing Sciences, Diploma in Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing, Diploma in Midwifery, should be registered with relevant bodies or Professional Councils of home country where applicable.

  • Diploma in Nursing Sciences

Certificate in Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing/Enrolled General Nursing, should be registered with relevant professional councils of the home country where applicable and with the experience of two working years.

Certificate in Nursing Sciences/ Comprehensive Nursing/ Midwifery

Five passes are required at ordinary level in the following subjects; Mathematics, Biology, chemistry, English and Physics/ Agriculture/Health Science/ Foods and Nutrition/ Geography

For holders of KCSE Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, they must have a minimum mean grade of B and minimum of B in relevant subjects which include English/Kiswahili, Mathematics/Physics/Physical sciences, Biology and Chemistry.

For Diploma holders, applicants must have a minimum mean grade of C, C in Biology/biological sciences, chemistry, English/Kiswahili and C- in physics/physical sciences and Mathematics.

Certificate graded in percentages and average points e.g Sudan, South Sudan, DRC, Somalia, Nigeria, Liberia, Ghana etc will be considered after Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has equated or translated the grades.

VII) ACCESS PROGRAMME

This is a pre-university programme designed for students who do not meet the minimum qualifications for direct entry into KIU degree or diploma programmes.   It is for students whose educational systems are different from Uganda’s but qualify for university entry under their home countries’ educational systems. Students who pass the access programme qualify to apply for KIU undergraduate courses.

Students who hold Kenyan Certificate of Education (KCSE) ie. 8:4:4 system and wish to enroll for either degree or diploma courses have to pass through the access programme.  To qualify for Access programme, applicants should have a minimum mean grade of C.

All the above degrees require; to have sat the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education and obtained at least 2 (two) principal passes in relevant subjects i.e. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry plus one subsidiary pass. For Diploma courses above, one should have obtained at least one principal pass in Mathematics, physics, and Chemistry.

To qualify for a Postgraduate Diploma, a candidate should have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institution of Higher Learning or the equivalent.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES IN WESTERN CAMPUS UNDER SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES INCLUDE;

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Anatomy
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Physiology
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Biochemistry

Duration of the courses;

  • All undergraduate arts degree courses take 3 years except Bachelor of Laws which takes four years, distance learning course takes 4 years, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery takes 5 ½ years, Bachelor of Nursing Sciences which takes 4 ½ years, Bachelor of Pharmacy which takes 4 ½ years, Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine and Community Health which takes 4 ½ years, Engineering courses take 4 years.
  • All Postgraduate Diploma courses take one Year.  Master Programmes take 2 to 3 years.
  • All Diploma courses take one to three years and Masters programs take 2-3 years
  • All Doctoral Programmes take 4 to 5 Years.

NB: Certificate and Diploma holders from recognized Institutions of Higher Learning are eligible to apply for either Diplomas or Degree courses of their choices.
