The School of Law at Zambian Open University and Entry Requirements

School of Law

The School of Law at Zambian Open University is the second law school to be established in Zambia after the school of law at the University of Zambia. It is one of the oldest schools at ZAOU. The School of Law is currently the biggest Law School in Zambia. It is proving to be a highly competitive law school judged by the high percentage in comparative terms to those from other law schools, who pass the ZIALE examinations and thus enter the legal practitioners market. The school offers the traditional LLB courses by a diverse faculty leading to an LLB degree that provides students with a sound knowledge of the general principles of the Zambian legal system with an international component, and an ability to use legal materials effectively. .

School of Law Profile

The graduates develop the knowledge to assess, analyse, interpret and apply the law to legal problems of their clients and society in general. Law is a practical science and as such students are taught the historical, comparative and jurisprudential background that is essential for a thorough and critical understanding of law and legal as well as political institutions.

The school is set to become the leading centre in the country for paralegal and graduate studies in law when these programmes are operationalized in the course of 2017. The School of Law is adding the following programmes to its LLB and Graduate Programme in Criminal Justice Studies: BA in Paralegal Studies; Diploma in Paralegal Studies; MA in Legal Studies; LLM and PhD. The entry requirements and study periods are the same as in equivalent programmes for that level of study. The provision of Legal Services for the majority of the population are in short supply and paralegal graduates will fulfill this demand. Zambia is in short supply of legal scholars with LLM and PhDs and ZAOU School of Law is aiming at supplying the demand in legal scholars to teach in our expanding and exploding law schools and graduate programmes.
